Don’t let burglars ruin your holiday

With 77% of adults planning a summer break, many homes will be left unoccupied — creating opportunities for burglars.

While burglaries are down 19% so far this year (January–June 2025), we’re urging everyone to stay vigilant and take simple steps to keep their homes safe while away.

Before you go on holiday, consider:

Make sure your home looks lived in

  • Ask a friend, family member, or neighbour to:

    • Put out and bring in your bins

    • Open and close curtains or blinds

    • Collect your post and any parcels.

  • Use smart plugs or timers to:

    • Switch lights or TVs on and off at set times

    • Play music during the day via smart speakers like Alexa.

Review your home security

  • Install an alarm system or security cameras

  • Fit outdoor sensor lights

  • Ensure sheds and outbuildings are locked.

Every one looks forward to their holidays, please make sure yours isn’t spoilt when you return home to find out valuable and sentimental items have been taken during your well-earned break.
